We judge it for you: Twilight

Mock it if you want, but for the legions of devoted fans of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling book series, Twilight was the most eagerly-awaited movie of 2008.

Heroine Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is a smart, quiet, and slightly clumsy 17-year old girl who moves to Forks, Washington, one of the cloudiest and rainiest towns in America, to live with her divorced dad Charlie (Billy Burke), the local police chief. Shortly after arriving, she falls in love with Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), the most attractive boy in her high school.

There’s only one problem: Edward is a vampire. Fortunately, he’s not a nefarious vampire like those that usually populate teenage horror films. Edward is part of a clan of well-intentioned vampires who drink animal blood instead of human; in an ongoing joke, they refer to themselves as the vegans of the vampire world.

Bella and Edward initially avoid each other and try to avoid their mutual attraction. Edward doesn’t want to hurt her (or worse — bite her), and Bella has been warned off the Cullens by her pal Jacob (Taylor Lautner), whose Native American tribe seem to be the enemies of the vampire family.

Though they eventually give into the mutual lust, there is one important caveat. Because he does not want to lose control around her, Edward tells Bella they can’t have sex. (The pro-abstinence message is one of the reasons the series has become so popular amongst tweens and their moms.) To keep their hormones in check, the couple spend a great deal of time not touching; while climbing trees or lying in meadows or sitting in class, they spend an inordinate amount of time gazing intensely and adoringly into each other’s eyes.

While Edward and Bella are busy falling in love, a trio of more evil vampires, led by tracker James (Cam Gigandet), are killing people near Forks, grabbing the attention of the Cullen family and Bella’s police chief father. Luckily, the script, though mostly faithful to the book, eliminates a great deal of Bella’s clumsiness and teenage swooning, and amps up the action scene (which in the book is mostly glossed over).

As far as tales of star-crossed lovers go, Edward and Bella are no Romeo and Juliet. Still, as an ode to love of the emo variety, the movie still manages to charm. The film is full of beautiful shots of sweeping northwest scenery, the soundtrack is appropriately moody, and the appealing leads are full of endearing teenage angst. You might go in skeptical, but allow yourself to be won over.

Film is directed by Catherine Hardwicke, and also stars Peter Facinelli (Carlisle), Ashley Greene (Alice), Nikki Reed (Rosalie), Jackson Rathbone (Jasper), Kellan Lutz (Emmett), Anna Kendrick (Jessica), Elizabeth Reaser (Esme), and Rachelle Lefevre (Victoria).

We judge it for you: Four Christmases

Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn in Four Christmases

The holidays always means a slew of seasonal films, but Four Christmases is a little different than most. It lacks the treacly oversweetened character of some earlier incarnations, but still manages to impart a Special Lesson. The film follows a couple as they visit their four families (one for each divorced parent) one Christmas, with each family as a separate vignette; each is a separate entry in a veritable scrapbook of the modern American family.

Brad (Vince Vaughn) and Kate (Reese Witherspoon) are a San Francisco couple who depart on a tropical vacation every year for the holidays, leaving behind parents, stepparents, siblings, nieces and nephews. But on their way to the latest exotic getaway, their delayed flight means they are suddenly all too available this year.

Brad and Kate, who do everything in their power to keep from becoming like their parents and families, have ended up shutting them out completely. Not only do they not allow themselves to know their own families, but they keep each other away as well. At every home the couple visits, the film seems to ask (without much subtlety): How well can you really know your partner if you don’t know where they came from?

Vaughn and Witherspoon, while not always entirely believable as a couple, at least make an entertaining duo. But the film is much improved by the supporting characters playing their families, most notably Jon Favreau as Brad’s cage-fighting brother Denver, Robert Duvall as Brad’s old-fashioned father Howard, Mary Steenburgen as Kate’s newly religious mother Marilyn and Kristin Chenoweth as Kate’s extremely peppy sister Courtney. They help turn Brad and Kate’s families from simple stereotypes into realistically damaged people who have been through a lot together, know each other’s shortcomings, and love each other anyway. Because that’s what families do, especially in holiday movies.

Film is directed by Seth Gordon and also stars Sissy Spacek (Paula), Jon Voight (Creighton), Dwight Yoakam (Pastor Phil), Tim McGraw (Dallas) and Katy Mixon (Susan).

Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan in Eagle Eye

Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan in Eagle Eye

Ever since George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece 1984 made people fear the influence of Big Brother, there have been countless books and movies that exploited the paranoia that “someone” — an amorphous, ill-defined authority figure — is watching. Eagle Eye starts out that way, but it soon becomes clear that here, Big Brother is doing a whole lot more than just watching.

Jerry Shaw (Shia LaBeouf) is a slacker who dropped out of college to bide his time working in a Chicago copy shop. When he finds his bank account with a much higher balance than it should have and his apartment full of suspicious packages, he knows he’s being set up for something — but he can’t figure out what. He starts receiving phone calls from a woman with very specific instructions; she not only seems to see him and know what he is up to, but she is also able to manipulate his environs by doing things like controlling construction equipment, flashing personalized messages on public billboards, and stopping El trains in their tracks.

Meanwhile, single mom Rachel Holloman (Michelle Monaghan) is sending her young, trumpet-playing son on a class trip to Washington, D.C. to perform for a V.I.P. audience. She is soon receiving the same mysterious phone calls with very specific directions, and when she refuses the voice on the phone threatens her son.

Ultimately, the mysterious voice unites Jerry and Rachel on an unknown quest to get to Washington, D.C. to do…something. The twist in the film involves why the two of them were targeted, but in one case it still doesn’t make much sense. The conspiracy theory come to life here is an eerie one, and given the state of technology it even seems plausible. But while it drives the plot along nicely for the first half of the film, the impetus seems to filter out in the second act.

The acting is top-notch, and the action sequences are frequent and appropriately explosive. The concept is neat — an all-seeing, all-knowing entity uses technology to coerce you into acting on its behalf — but all the plot contrivances feel too forced, and the ending is a little too convenient. Eagle Eye is ultimately an entertaining movie that’s been done in by its own complications.

Film is directed by D.J. Caruso and also stars Rosario Dawson (Zoe Perez), Michael Chiklis (Defense Secretary George Callister), Anthony Mackie (Major Bowman), Ethan Embry (Agent Tony Grant) and Billy Bob Thornton (Agent Thomas Morgan).
